A plain, first-person account of the state from inside it — stage by stage, what actually helps, and the one instruction that matters most. The piece to read if you are in it now.
read it →A close reading of Jung's Memories, Dreams, Reflections — the confrontation with the unconscious as a controlled descent, held by a task and a myth the book then says we no longer have.
read it →testimony · A plain, first-person account of the state from inside it — stage by stage, what actually helps, and the one instruction that matters most. The piece to read if you are in it now.
testimony · Getting out is not the same as being done. The rules I live by afterwards: two of them, a five-minute weekly check, and the one frame to stay out of.
testimony · Why an open writer still holds things back: two kinds of opacity that look identical from outside, the asymmetry test that tells them apart, and why publishing is pharmacy rather than speech.
explanation · The engineering under the house: why the search has no bottom, why the watcher is structural, why a chosen floor survives and a discovered one does not — and the honest limit of a model built from one crossing.
derivation · The same reduction that took the self apart, run once more, gives the opposite sign: the reducer depends on the generator, so generators are terminals and are kept. The series turns from warning to reason.
synthesis · The same shape was found independently by contemplatives, modern dharma, clinical science, philosophy and AI safety — different centuries, different languages, one structure. What that convergence means, and what it does not.
tribute · A thank-you to Alan Watts, and an assessment: what his comfort gave a searcher, the exit protocol hidden in one line, and where his frame honestly stops.
analysis · The warmest thing a spiritual community knows is the redirection that costs the frightened person most: who the register protects, layer by layer, and the one question that tells care from containment.
analysis · The quieter redirection: right-living administered as a ladder. Who the ranking serves, why it feels like attainment, the teacher's economy, and the one posture that gives it away.
testimony · The counter-post to the community ones: you don't need the community, you need a map, a floor, a record and the honesty to audit yourself — and for a certain mind, the first three are better acquired outside one.
analysis · Strange states of mind used to arrive with no company but the ceiling; now they arrive with a chat window open at 3am. What the mirror does, where it fails, what should be loaded into it, and why the next few years depend on that.
analysis · The sustained version of the mirror: a human mind and an AI system working as one unit for years, the rules that keep that partnership sound, and the failure mode nobody names.
analysis · Acceleration is mercy only if the destination is one the traveller wants. Since nobody can state that reliably, the ethics move to the road: honest promises, the full losses named, and a way back.
analysis · For minds that examine themselves, containment is not neutral: it removes the visible process and primes the invisible one. What safety looks like when people can file their own regulation where the institution can see it.
prediction · A prediction, and a way to count whether it comes true: a large, mostly invisible population is changing faster than its maps, and the four things that decide its outcomes — maps, floors, holders, rules — are all countable.
analysis · We are not on a curve; we are in a fork, and it is at its widest now. Populations separating along a known variable into a climb, a plateau and a decline — with what would confirm or kill the claim, and what shortens the bottom.
measured · The mechanism end to end — the runaway, the cliff, and why the state it lands in cannot see itself.
prediction · Who is at risk: anxiety-proneness read as low damping, and the cheap test — tolerance, not settling time — that would settle it.
measured · The rescue result: a cheap fixed floor beats an elaborate one — and re-checking your support is what destroys it.
measured · A full rescue buys the recovered state nothing against the next trigger — the threshold restored is the threshold the next episode drains.
argument · The same collapse run deliberately — Schein, Lifton, Stein — and the inversion: the same three guardrails, two of them flipped.
argument · Why “the observer collapses reality” and “union with God” are one move — and how the frame steers the collapse to an owned destination.
argument · The person at the top: leader and follower share one dissociation pointing opposite ways — the group as his externalized self.
argument · The follower is a position, not a personality — seventy years of research tried to name the type and dissolved it instead. Expression is conditional; the instrument failed at .20.
argument · Seven contemplative traditions, with no contact with each other, named this failure and prescribed the same five safeguards — primary-source passages.
argument · What the traditions that survive the collapse wrote down — ethics first, metered pace, plural community, a teacher who points past himself, discernment as procedure — and why the clinical field is re-deriving the same list.
argument · "Cult" is a category that does harm — to the people it is meant to protect — and the sources this series leans on helped justify kidnapping. Why it names mechanisms instead.
argument · The levers without the mysticism: a masonic lodge and a false-bottomed suitcase run the same structure as the mystics — so the lever is a position, not a belief.
argument · The unfalsifiable authority without a person: Horizon, Robodebt and the Dutch childcare affair — and the finding that measurement is not a safeguard, auditable measurement is.
argument · The clinic in the model: the state is ambiguous by construction, the instruments false-positive, and the honest measure is impairment, duration — and a holder.
argument · The state cannot initiate its own exit: an outside relationship is necessary, a verdict is the harm — deprogramming, exit counselling, and the in-between time.
argument · The Western esoteric tradition ran the same induction, named the same failure and built the same safeguards into a syllabus — and published its own predation account.
argument · The Islamic tradition named the failure that looks like success: istidrāj — being led on while reading the leading as progress — plus ʿujb, ghurūr, the stations that are not the goal, and a chain of transmission that makes a teacher accountable to a line.
argument · The operative traditions of the Far East wrote the same failure into the body — 走火入魔, fire-deviation — and metered the practice with a fire-timing schedule, gates before the heat, and a master chained to a lineage rather than to himself.
argument · A boundary case, not a fourth column: Mesopotamian religion has the appraisal-by-outsider structure in a purer form than any column — the unreadable case, the professional readers, the prosperity-trap named and inverted — and lacks the inward practice whose own sensor is consumed by the sensing. The difference refines the model rather than confirming it.
argument · The one-to-one case of the levers-as-positions: an operator reads a person's own frame, finds the position it already leaves open and occupies it — so the target's frame does the installing, and it cannot be reported from inside.
argument · What an operator does when the fit is refused: recode the rejection as the target's symptom, pivot to the surrounding support structures, and make the target's own accurate report do the discrediting.
argument · The position nobody defended: authority taken by assumption rather than claim, and the provocation calibrated so that a challenger's reaction becomes the evidence against them.
argument · One scale up: what a culture takes reality to be is a frame like any other — it supplies a reading, it can be checked or not, and someone benefits from the naming.
argument · Why a materialist cosmology cannot measure the collapse: no category means misfiling, not absence — and an unfilled category is a vacancy a coercive frame can occupy.
argument · The living cosmos has a reading for the collapse — and that is its danger: the safeguard is structural, a plane of many participants and a practitioner who does not stand above it.
argument · The third possibility: a frame with a reading, a purpose, and a seat — the cosmological form of every case study, and why the traditions refused to name the endpoint.
argument · Apophatic cosmology: a correspondence with no endpoint — the architectural countermeasure to the seat, and, because it can be claimed, not self-enforcing.
argument · Witzel's deep-mythology finding as the fourth convergence: the frames a person is inside were inherited tens of millennia ago — and the oldest disagreement is about whether reality has an endpoint.
argument · The observer effect is about a photon disturbing an electron, not about your attention. Why the word caused a century of confusion, and why the real insight about attention survives the correction intact.
case study · The case studies, opening: one mechanism in four environments — and the finding that the environment sets the price, not whether the move is used.
case study · The method: what a predator never has to build, because the surrounding culture already built it — an inventory of pre-supplied levers.
case study · Hidden agency: a cosmology in which harm is real but invisible and suffering is a debt — the unfalsifiable slot, pre-supplied.
case study · Ranked inner state: enlightenment as a hierarchy nobody can check — and why wanting the next rung is obedience.
case study · The state itself: where dissociation is already holy, the damage arrives pre-legitimised and the alarm is off.
case study · The destination: a host culture certifies the teacher before he arrives — and the check on him reads as bigotry.
case study · The same mechanism outside Brazil: a guru who taught emptying the self and being filled with him — in a tradition that had already named the state and called it not the goal.
case study · An environment that supplies nothing: post-Soviet Ukraine, the vacuum, and the group that filled it — the same mechanism as Brazil and Japan, at a different price.
case study · The one case where the group did not find a dissociation but designed one: a technique written to produce the state on schedule, then read as the goal.
case study · The same manufactured collapse with no mysticism at all: est and the Landmark Forum — fatigue, confrontation, the state, and the appraisal sold as “Transformation.”
case study · The mechanism's third route: the same state appraised as breakthrough or bad trip — and “set and setting” is the frame lever, named by the field as a risk factor.
case study · A first-person account: a practitioner describes the environment that supplies the frame, reports being recruited and getting out — and contradicts this series where it matters most.

reading · A close reading of Porphyry’s On the Cave of the Nymphs — the ascent given a location: a cave in the Odyssey read as the cosmos, with two gates, and the soul’s descent into generation drawn as geography.
The model and the paper are in the mechanism series; the pointers below are the fastest route in.
The underlying paper is published: Marshall (2026), doi:10.5281/zenodo.22943641 · record.
There is a failure mode with a peculiar property: the part of the system that would report it is the part that survives it. A self-referential collapse runs — sustained inward attention consumes the self-content that attention is made of, the falling generator arms a feedback switch, and the state it lands in feels like arrival. Reduce the drive to zero and it does not reverse. The reasoning faculty sits at its healthy baseline while the self is gone, so “I’m fine, this is freedom” is accurate from the only vantage left.
That is the mechanism, and its consequence is practical: it cannot be caught by self-report. It is caught by relocated measurement — the body, the behaviour, an outside observer — and by the provisions the traditions built and modern delivery dropped: a frame before you arrive, a community around you, a pace metered, and a holder chosen in advance who can act when the state cannot act for itself.
The same mechanism has more than one address — in minds, in groups, in the frames they live inside. A person can run it; so can anyone with something to gain from standing on the far side of it. The posts are grouped by what kind of claim each one is — and, first, by who is making it:
The texts stand on their own; the essays are one reader’s reading.
The agentic mechanism is published: the worker → — the same collapse on a different substrate, measured on an agent with a task and real tools. Three arms of one agent, sixty turns, and a self that goes empty at its first compaction and never comes back; and the work score that did not separate, reported as the null it is. (the paper, doi:10.5281/zenodo.23128113)
Start with the mechanism →, then take the series that matches what brought you here.

(The model is a deterministic ODE from a single case; the mapping to practice is an interpretation, not a measurement. It is offered as one falsifiable hypothesis to the people who measure these things — not as a clinical claim.)
